What is an Aviation Medical?

An Aviation Medical is a detailed health assessment mandated by CASA to ensure that aviation professionals, including pilots and air traffic controllers, meet stringent medical fitness standards. At Brookside Family Clinic, Dr. Simon Boon Chong offers Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 aviation medical certifications, ensuring you meet all regulatory requirements for safe flight operations.

Dr. Simon Boon Chong, our CASA-qualified Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME), provides comprehensive medical assessments (DAME and DAME2) that cover:

  • Vision, including colour perception, visual acuity, and depth perception.
  • Hearing assessments to confirm auditory capacity.
  • Mental health evaluations for conditions like anxiety, depression, and stress, which are crucial for maintaining cognitive fitness in high-responsibility roles.
  • Cardiovascular health, including ECGs for Class 1 applicants, to monitor heart health.
  • General physical health, including blood pressure, respiratory function, and overall fitness.

We offer a smooth and efficient process for acquiring the appropriate medical certificate, whether it’s a Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate for commercial pilots, a Class 2 Medical Certificate for private pilots, or a Class 3 Medical Certificate for air traffic controllers.

Types of Aviation Medical Certificates

Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate

This certificate is required for commercial pilots and involves the most stringent level of health screening. The Class 1 medicals involve:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to check heart health, especially for pilots over 40.
  • Comprehensive vision and hearing assessments.
  • Additional tests based on age and medical history, as required by CASA.

Class 2 Aviation Medical Certificate

A Class 2 certificate is for recreational private pilots and balloon pilots. Examination covers key areas necessary to fly. Class 2 medicals typically include:

  • Vision, hearing, and general health checks.
  • Blood pressure and cardiovascular assessments.
  • Additional tests depending on the individual’s health status.

Class 3 Aviation Medical Certificate

The Class 3 certificate is specifically for air traffic controllers and flight service officers, and focuses on ensuring their cognitive and physical fitness for safe air traffic control operations. It includes:

  • Mental health assessments.
  • Vision and hearing tests.
  • General health checks to ensure fitness for duty.
